Red Moccasin Diaries

Categories: Native

IMG_4527Since my black moccasins with rabbit fur started to look worse for wear after just two years, at the end of last winter, I decided to let them go. This left me with big *ahem* moccasins to fill since I wanted to forgo the store-bought, mass produced, ‘made in China’ moccasins and kick it with some authentic moccs. For a Native girl who lives in Toronto, you think I might as well have asked for authentic sealskin mukluks because I was not finding any. I was given a few referrals and almost had my hands on a pair a few … Continued

art-img-poi_BIG_1Photo from McMichael Canadian Art Canada  Eli’s Blanket Romanticized Indian About 4 years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Jane Ash Poitras downtown Toronto at a First Nations community art roundtable. She was humble, kind, and totally down to earth. She even liked to kick it to Johny Cash while hanging on the east end. I told her I admired her work as she marvelled about the fact that banks were buying her mixed media pieces to hang in their institutions. What I didn’t tell her is how about 7 years earlier I came across her work in the … Continued

Lounging at TIFF

IMG_4502So le bf had a gig on Monday night at the TIFF Filmmakers lounge so I got to go check out the lounge with my best Twitter bud Jas. We gots to hang out downstairs out on the patio and mingle with some filmmakers. It was awesome because I ran into Lisa Jackson, Anishinaabe filmmaker, whom I met during my stint at imagineNATIVE Film Festival. I just love meeting other Natives in the city, particularly in places where it is least expected. I got a copy of her movie, Savage, which won two Leos and was nominated in eight categories. … Continued

MarieClaireJune2010Feather jewelry makes me so happy. I recently went through an arrowhead jewelry obsession which I am promptly replacing with my feather addiction. Do I need a 12 step program? Probably not. The above tear features a lovely feather number from Swarovski. Love. Feel free to send it to me.    Photos from Net-A-Porter The Swarovski necklace is a gold-tone brass and it can be all yours for a mere $400 USD. Photo from Pret-A-Porter On the more delicate side there is the Aurelie Bidermann feather necklace that is 18-karat gold-dipped and it’s stunning for a more every day look … Continued

I was first introduced to it at the Cover FX Launch last week at Wish Lounge. I invited by my friend Lisa Charleyboy and I also had the chance to meet the founders Lee Graff and Jenny Frankel. It’s nice to see such successful women stay humble and want to give back. … Continued

Kent Monkman is a Man of Style

Categories: Art

Page1and2MichaelCheck out Kent Monkman’s loft conversion that was featured in the summer issue of Design Lines. It is so beautiful and innovative, just like his artwork. Monkman is a Cree/Irish artist who makes amazing Two-Spirited Canadiana Kitsch work as well as a filmmaker. I have been a fan of his work since I saw his short, Shooting Geronimo, when I worked at imagineNATIVE Film Festival. His modern and humourous approach makes him stand out amongst First Nations artist. His loft is an artist’s dream. Big space, blank white walls and polished concrete floors are exactly what I dream of. Kudos … Continued

9-Blue-Arrow-Print-Shoulder-BagI dream in technicolor and I like to wander the streets with everything under the sun in my big bag I can be ready for anything. Thanks to Kate Crowley from the Heard Museum who shared this beautiful line, Me & Arrow, with me. These purses and pouches have that modern vibe that Pendleton needs. The colors are vibrant without being gauche. The designers find deadstock fabric and use it to make unique finds.  This shoulder bag is $250 and can be ordered online. Sometimes life is just shades of grey but I love crossing the border to get the … Continued
