Last week I went out for my first raw food dinner at Rawlicious with @a_mandolin and @erisb. It was pretty amazing because I have been dying to go to this resto for a long time as I want to start incorporating raw food into my eating regime more and figured I'd be inspired by this healthy place. Both Amanda and Eris saw my desire to do this via Twitter and so we scheduled a #RawTO Tweet up. For those not Twitter inclined, a Tweet up is when you meet people from Twitter in your city IRL. It was my first time meeting with both of them and I was in heart at the first conversation. It turns out we have all had a long history of complicated relationships with food. We spent hours talking and enjoying our food. We shared raw "nachos" and I had a taco salad (I have been obsessed with taco salads lately). We had a great time and I think we all felt pretty happy to meet other people that we can talk about our food sensitivities with, without receiving eye rolls or yawns after 2 minutes ...
I was inspired by Eris, because she has recently decided to go sans makeup. She has seriously flawless, glowing skin and she said that she noticed a major improvement after deciding to do this. Amanda said she has also decided to go sans makeup more often than not as of late. Then I decided to try it too. Since I started the new job I have literally like ten minutes to do my makeup and hair since I am always rushing behind and
I have since gone without makeup ... mostly. I use Cover FX, which is dermatologist friendly and the powder is made from minerals, which I use on an as-needed basis. I also had Korres Absynnia Oil mascara kicking around that I hadn't tried yet. It's free from most chemicals, and is a more natural mascara than most that I have been using. I am really happy with the results. It gives a really natural look but it still thickens and lengthens my eyelashes (just don't expect DiorShow performance here). I use the mascara only if I am going out at night for dinner, or meeting up with friends now (and not going straight home to do my moonlighting freelance writing). This new 'stripped down' look feels really good so I decided to take this approach in other parts of my life too.
Today I am headed off to LA for the weekend, and I am so excited to announce that I have packed everything into a carry-on for the entire weekend. I didn't even cheat and pack a backpack or briefcase, but just bringing my usual massive leather hobo bag. I was skeptical of whether I could make it happen, since I love to overpack and bring things "just in case" but I had some guidance from @melissaiscool, a savvy traveller (she went for a week in Tokyo with only a carry on), and made it through. I even have room in my carry-on for shopping.
At this rate, I am slightly tempted to start at my wardrobe for a more 'stripped down' approach. But who am I kidding, it's already a minimalist-at-heart's wardrobe, any more and I might just be austere.

I'm a big fan of the "stripped down" approach when it comes to make-up -- and what it does for your skin! I think every woman should enjoy the freedom of going make-up-free if she so desires. :) Great post!
ReplyDeleteCynthia - glad you enjoyed the post. I am greatly looking forward to enjoying the benefits of going without makeup!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is wonderful. I'm in Toronto too, gluten-free (and dairy-free) so I LOVE whenever you mention anything food related. Plus I'm a sucker for makeup reviews (loving Cover FX too)
ReplyDeleteWhat do you use on your lips makeup-wise? I'm having a hard time finding glosses or liners besides NARS that are gluten-free and.. pretty.
I just had some yummy gazpacho recently. I have been stopping at farm stands to get fresh, local and some organic produce. Feels good to have these foods going in my body. I am vegetarian and I make a huge effort to have raw foods as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteI don't wear makeup because I feel it is a waste of time, personally. An austere life is a good life. Several years ago I used to be able to fit everything I owned in my small compact car. That is not the case anymore because I am more settled but I do enjoy simple living.
Hope you had a nice time in LA! ;)
I think it's a good idea! I've been trying to minimize my makeup application too. There's nothing worse than a face full of caked on makeup!
ReplyDeleteAs for the packing...I've done Europe for the last 3 years with a carry on! So it's definitely possible...especially in the summer :) Good luck and have fun in LA! Bring back some photos!
Nelia - Europe with only a carry on? For a fashionista? Wow you are a packing pro for real. Can't wait to challenge myself more on the carry-on only!
ReplyDeleteAnishinaabekwe - oh man I love having everything I own fit in a car. I think it is so great to be able to pick up and move at a moment's notice. Weird perhaps but I don't like having too many belongings. Now I have way too many books, that is my weakness ...
ReplyDeleteAnon - Thank you so much! This comment made me light up a little inside. I would like to do more food-related blogs, especially since I am meeting with a Holistic Nutritionist soon who will likely alter my habits drastically! I have also neglected beauty for a while and need to get back on that too- lots of great products out there :). I haven't noticed issues with lip products not being gluten-free but now you have me thinking about that too.
