Roundup 03.26

So I had so much fun last weekend (as evidence shows above) but then I paid for it all week as I was basically grounded because of all my work. I managed to get back in the gym so that's a good start in the right direction again. Basically my next month I will be working really, really hard and not getting to go out that much, but that's okay because it's great practise for me to continue on plugging away and getting closer and closer to my goals. I am thankful for all this work that has come my way and enables me to challenge myself in new ways.

News
-Excalibur newspaper won fifth place in the Associated Collegiate Press's Best of Show competition at the Phoenix, Arizona convention. I worked at this York University newspaper and it was some of the best experience I got while still in school. I owe my journalistic career to this paper and I am so happy to see it winning awards now.

Native
-Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos Indian Band is my Indian hero. He runs an economically sound band that has numerous businesses. He is visiting other Indian bands to help them get economic independence. Loves it!

Film
-Maori actors are hired for Green Lantern, including the foxy Taika Waititi.  I wrote about it for Reel Artsy here.
-Cree actor/director Georgina Lightning was nominated for a 2010 Epic Emerging Artist Award 'The White House Project' for Older Than America. Voting online is open until March 31st, so please vote for her here. She is an amazing beacon in Aboriginal cinema and a real inspiration. Plus she is super fun and nice to hang with.

Beauty
-I wrote a green beauty routine article for MSN which talks about using coconut oil, which is my weapon for long, lustrous locks. If you don't use it already, get on it. It has made such a difference in my hair life.

-Okay I am not advocating IKEA here, but these new KARLSTAD tufted leather collection has definitely caught my eye. I love white tufted leather, a lot. I have been dreaming of a headboard of white tufted leather. Maybe one day when I have my minimal loft I can indulge my whims.

Fashion
-I rewarded myself this week for all of my hard work (seriously I barely left the house) with this brass arrowhead necklace by Mary Jane Frances. I have been lusting after it since she put up this new design on her Etsy shop a few months ago. I can't wait to get it into my hands.

Food

-I went to La Palette Friday night and fell in love with bison all over again. They also had this flourless chocolate cake that was #GlutenFree which was amazing! I love this resto so much and I was told that it will be opening up on Queen Street West in the Taro Grill location soon so I am super excited. Now I don't have to venture off my beaten path too much too indulge in all their yummy delights.
-Saturday night was a birthday celebration night and we were off to Chimichangas newest location in Yorkville. This restaurant has only been open a few months and we had a massive group making the busy restaurant even more crazy. You could say we broke them in. Also the owner and my bf had a mutual business friend so we got to do a shot of Gran Patron Platinum tequila. There are only 500 bottles of this made a year and it went down so smoothly. I would probably devour this tequila if it weren't $40 a shot. Chimichangas has the best guacamole and fresh chips in the city. Go there for mangoritas - ole!

  3. Oh my gosh! I worked at the Excal, too! (News Editor, 2000-2003). It really was an amazing training ground, wasn't it? Small, small world.

    Go Excal!

Will La Palette be leaving Kensington or just opening another restaurant on Queen?

  6. Hey Lisa,

Thanks so much for the plug! I worry, too, about what this paper will do next year when I'm gone! Haha. And yeah, Excal alumni just seem to pop out of the woodwork sometimes!

    Cheers,
    Alex
