We’re very fortunate to be able to live in a country that can offer practically any kind of vegetable or fruit any time of the year. Other then being good for you have you ever wondered how else these items can be beneficial to your daily life?

Olive Oil

Apply olive oil directly onto dry skin; you can add a few drops of essential oils to add some relaxing scents.

For a hot oil treatment for your hair, warm the oil for a few seconds in the microwave and apply to damp hair via spray bottle. Wrap your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap for further effectiveness. And make sure you shampoo your hair thoroughly or your hair will feel greasy, and skip the conditioner.

Cayenne Pepper

When you take cayenne on a regular daily basis you can increase your metabolism some say as much as 25%, although it’s not a sole factor for losing weight, it can assist in equalizing your metabolism. Putting just a quarter of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder into a glass of warm water (that would be ideal), will immediately benefit your entire circulatory system, your intestines, your stomach, not to mention give your heart muscles an infusion of minerals that is necessary for its proper function.

Ginger

Chewing a small piece of ginger can help alleviate motion sickness as can sipping on chamomile or peppermint tea.

Cider Vinegar and Honey

Dissolve equal parts to boiling water to soothe a sore throat.

Garlic

Helps to boost your immune system, fight colds, good for blood circulation, help lower high blood pressure and help reduce a fever.
 Sea Salt

One of my favorite natural remedies is sea salt; it can be used in so many ways other then seasoning food. The body needs salt to maintain water in the body and help distribute carbon dioxide through the blood. Salt is also used as a form of saline solution which is found in your tears, sweat and saliva. It’s a great exfoliator for the skin and can give your skin a healthy glow.

Try adding:
1 1/2 cups sea salt
1 tablespoon pure honey
4 vitamin E capsules
3/4 cup baby oil
essential oils (fragrance of your choice)

Massage the sea salt scrub all over your body and rinse off thoroughly. Your skin will feel soft and glowing.

And my top remedy of all is used as sea salt water flush. First thing in the morning, mix one liter of lukewarm water with two teaspoonfuls of sea salt. Drink the entire concoction before you have eaten any food. It tastes awful but it will cleanse you like nothing else. A little piece of advice, give yourself a good hour for full affect and make sure you’re near a washroom.

  1. So interesting! Lisa, I saw in your earlier post about your obsession with cooking with Coconut Oil...where do you get it in Toronto? I've been looking for a larger jar, and cannot find it :( Thanks!

  2. Nelia - I found it at Qi on Roncesvalles- it's a 15 oz size so not too big but so far I have only used one recipe with it (chocolates). I love it in my hair though and I am going to try it on my skin now :).
