Urban Warrior: Waawaate Fobister

Waawaate as 'Goose' in his play Agokwe
Waawaate Fobister (Anishnaabe from Grassy Narrows, Ontario) of Toronto, Ontario is an award-winning actor and playwright. He graduated from Humber College in Theatre Performance in 2005. His debut play Agokwe won 6 Dora Awards in 2009. He is currently working on a film script. Waawaate tells UNGS the top ten things he can't live without.

1. Lady Gaga
Right now I am really into her.  I love music that makes me dance and I love to dance. Even in the shower I dance to Lady Gaga.

2. MacBook Pro
When I am on the road I still need to be able to write my plays and scripts and I still need to work. My MacBook allows me to write on the go, even in coffee shops in Toronto.

3. Young Living Essential Oils
I take clarity, peppermint, and lavender with me wherever I go. The Young Living brand is what I like the most. They smell amazing and I use them as a form of natural medicine. Lavender is calming and I use the others as a form of protection for me.

4. Thai Food
I love Thai food, whether it's Pad Thai, red curry with coconut milk, I just can't get enough. Circle Thai is closest to me and very convenient to fulfil my Thai desires. I also love Just Thai on Church Street, which I frequent a lot when I am in the area.

5. My Necklace
I bought this necklace in Kenora, Ontario at 'Sure Thing' when I was in high school and I lost it. Then I had to buy another one to replace it. I wear it every single day except when I am wearing a suit. I think it looks like a hazardous symbol.

6. Church Street
This is my favourite place is Toronto. It is where all the gay men are and you check out the guys and get checked out. It's like an instant ego-boost going there. I especially love Buddies in Bad Times Theater, it is one of my favorite haunts.

7. iPhone Custom Caller Pictures
I love when people call me and I have a really sexy shot of them on my phone. I go to people's Facebook on my phone and do a screen capture with my iPhone when I find their sexiest picture. Then I select it from my contacts page to edit their photo from my camera roll. Presto sexy people calling me all the time.

8. Shiseido Men's Skincare line
I use the Shiseido line for cleansing, exfoliating, toning, lotion, and for their shaving cream. It's an expensive line, but once I started using it I was hooked. It smells great, it makes me look great, and it works very well.

9. Chick Flicks
I enjoy watching mindless, silly, fun movies because everyday life can be drab, and dramatic at times. It 's great to relax to an uplifting movie that can just take me away from all of that.

10. Dave & Busters
This place is in Vaughan and it's always a great place to go. You can play video games, drink beer, order nachos, and win prizes. It's like an adult Chuck E. Cheese.

Inspired by Toronto Life's 'City Survivor' pages, UNGS is selecting Indigenous individuals from all over who represent what it is to be a Native person living in today's modern world and how we decide to navigate it.

  1. Hi Lisa!

I like your list :) I haven't experienced it all but I definitely agree with:

#2: glad that it loads quickly, installing and uninstalling software is so easy and the laptop itself is very lightweight

#4: I often crave pad thai. So far my favourite is Lemongrass (Bloor & Islington) and Simply Thai (Bloor and Runnymede)

#8: I love Shiseido skincare and cosmetics for women :)

#9: I was with my girlfriends the other night and we were talking about how much we enjoyed Enchanted and would like to see Leap Year (regardless of it's poor reviews)

  2. Susan - Thanks for checking in. This series is when I ask various people in the Native community what their favorite things are that they can't live without so this list is totally up to Waawaate's whims and what he likes. I do love Thai food, chick flicks, and Mac for sure though :)

  5. You know so many awesome people in Toronto! I used to go there a lot in my early twenties when it was seemingly much easier to cross the border. We would take night trips there from Detroit. It was tons of fun!

I would love to visit Toronto sometime soon! It is an 8 hour drive from where I am living now.
