Erika Archer (singer, dancer, pow wow dancer) tells UNGS the top ten albums that have moved her this decade.
1. ‘N Sync “No Strings Attached”
(2000)
‘N Sync released this album during this time I was a huge ‘N Sync fan; Justin Timberlake being my favorite (of course). I could not wait to get my hands on their brand new album which in 2001 ended up being nominated for a Grammy award. Great songs, handsome guys, and great dancing who wouldn’t love these guys right?
2. Michael Jackson “Invincible”
(2001)
With anything coming from Michael “the love of my life,” (ha ha) I must have and I know I will love. I felt the critics extremely downplayed the greatness of this album! As always, Michael’s personal life was under criticism and therefore everyone searched for anything negative to pull out of his work, however the truth is … as always, his work in “Invincible” was extremely personal, heart felt, creative, and genius as anything Michael touched resulted in.
3. Aaliyah “Aaliyah”
(2001)
I was a big Aaliyah fan during this time and; people in high school often nicknamed me Aaliyah because I would wear her signature hairstyle with the hair parted to cover one side of the face. I always found Aaliyah to be very creative; she had always been smooth and sexy with a tomboy edge. I was extremely saddened by the passing of Aaliyah and I believe she would of grown to be an even more amazing artist had she still been living to make it to this day.
4. Michael Jackson “Number Ones”
(2003)
What could be better than this album? In my own personal view every single song created by Michael is amazing so an album of his most popular and best selling records is by far the best CD ever released in my own opinion! I truly and whole heartedly believe that with the tragic and unexpected passing this past year of 2009 every single one of his songs now have an added feeling to it, they all feel and sound differently because you are hearing more of himself and his heart through his work even more so than before. I am still very heart broken and emotionally hurt by his passing however I am happy to know that he is no longer suffering from the cruelty and judgmental ways of people in this world. I have always said that Michael was and is my soul mate, not in any sort of romantic way but I always felt a deep connection with him in terms of his heart and soul, I felt we share a similar understanding and view of life and love for all things living.
5. The Dream “Love/Hate”
(2007)
I loved this The Dreams album because as a dancer I really enjoy the tracks that are often great to dance and create choreography to. I believe The Dream has a great talent in producing music and song writing, so far I have not found any of his song concepts to be boring or something that we have all heard or scene over again already.
6. Janet Jackson “Discipline”
(2008)
I was very excited to see Janet returning so heavily on the music season.
7. Britney Spears “Circus”
(2008)
I felt a sigh of relief with this album because I was so happy that finally the Britney I loved was back. By the time “Circus” was released Britney had begun putting the pieces of her life back together and came out with a great album that helped us to remember why she was the “princess of pop” (as some may call her) to begin with.
8. Beyonce “I am Sasha Fierce” (2008)
This album is by far my favorite of anything having to do with Beyonce. In all honesty I have not be a huge Beyonce or Destiny’s Child fan, however this particular album I really loved. I loved the creativity and style of the album, and I also believe it holds true for many women that we have many different sides to our personality (alter egos) that make us all up as a whole.
9. Janet Jackson “Number Ones”
(2009)
Janet Jackson’s “Number Ones” was released in 2009. I have always been a fan of Janet, like her brother the Jackson family is one of such great talent and I have always loved and respected Janet’s work as well.
10. Lady Gaga “The Fame Monster”
(2009)
I believe by far Lady Gaga ran the scene in 2009. She has created a style that is truly unique and untouchable. I love her outrageous and odd style and I think she is a breath of fresh air and individuality to the music scene.
