Elisapie Issac

I got home a few weeks back to a new CD sitting on my desk. I was told she was Inuk and does a blend of pop and folk music that I am so fond of, and that she sings in her own language. Well it has been on constant replay in my iTunes playlist since then.

Elisapie Isaac is a talented Inuk singer, composer, and filmmaker who has just released her first solo album, 'There Will Be Stars,' this past September. She is one half of TAIMA, which won a Juno Award in 2005 for Aboriginal Album of the Year. She is also one half Inuk (from her mother). Her father was from Newfoundland, but she was raised traditionally in Salluit, Nunavik after being adopted by an Inuit family.

The album is in English, Inuk and French and is woven seamlessly between these languages. Her music is beautiful, haunting, sweet, and at times you want to sing right along. My favorite tracks are "Wish Song" and "Do You Hear Me." You can check out some of her songs on her music section of her site. I look forward to hearing more from Elisapie Isaac and hopefully seeing her perform live (*crosses fingers*).

Reminds me of: Cat Power, Lhasa de Sala
