Top Chick Flicks of the Decade

For my homage to the decade of 2000, I have decided to list my top ten films that I have fallen in love with this decade. Warning: This is an über-girly, rom-com biased list so if that's not your idea of a fun film you probably should just skip this all together.

1. Devil Wears Prada (2006)

I could barely wait for this movie to be released in theaters. I read the book and fell in love with the story (a journalist who ends up working at Vogue Runway Magazine in NYC). I met the author, Lauren Weisberger, at a reading in Toronto while the movie was being filmed and we gabbed a little about it. Did you know it's a roman à clef novel? When it opened in theaters I saw it twice in the first week. Then I got the DVD as a gift and have watched it probably more than a dozen times.

Favorite quote: "By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me." Miranda Priestly

2. Legally Blonde (2001)

Yes we are talking super cheese here, and I love it. Who doesn't adore Elle Woods and her determined aspirations (even if it is just to get an ex-boyfriend back)? Her pink prowess and her pink posse who  helps her get into Harvard is pretty awesome I must say. We are talking a girl going from undergrad fashion studies to Harvard law school here. I love that she is so fashionable on campus and doesn't let all the nay-sayers get to her. This movie is perfect fluff when I am feeling blue.

Favorite quote: "It's impossible to use a double loop stitching on low-viscosity rayon. It would snag the fabric. And you didn't just get it in - I saw it in the June Vogue a year ago. So if  you are trying to sell it for full price, you've picked the wrong girl." Elle Woods

3. 13 Going on 30 (2004)

The cruel fashion magazine editor who suddenly has a heart of gold. Why's that? Because she has regressed to the lovely age of thirteen years old. She finds her way to true happiness and sheds herself of her callous, heartless former ways. Mark Ruffalo is the love interest in this flick, and it might just be worth it to catch glimpses of him. Honestly Jennifer Garner's cheesiness even gets to me sometimes in this movie, but thank goodness for Judy Greer's bitchy character, Lucy, who injects some sarcastic humour into the film.

Favorite Quote: "Okay, you can wipe the doe-eyed-Bambi-watching-her-mother-get-shot-and-strapped-to-the-back-of-a-van look from your face." Lucy Wyman

4. Connie and Carla (2004)

This indie flick flew under the radar for most people. It features Toni Colette and Nia Vardalos who skip town and head to LA after witnessing some unsavory criminal activity. The two had a musical act back home and want to continue but don't want to be caught so they go underground and become drag queens. Full of hilarity and hysterics, this is a great film for lightening the spirits and enjoying a good laugh.

Favorite Quote: "We're girls pretending to be guys pretending to be girls." Carla

5. Pretty Persuasion (2005)

After I read the review in Now Magazine titled "Not Clueless" I knew I had to see this movie. It is the dark, more sadistic sister of cotton candy Clueless. The main character is a bitch (much like Cher could be seen as in some lights), but actually a twisted, sadistic and slightly racist bitch. Not that she's a role model, but the movie gives a more interesting romp through high school follies.

Favorite Quote: "If I wasn't white, then the next thing I would wanna be is Asian because a lot of men like Asian girls because they think they're docile and subservient and sweet which I don't really think is true because I once met this Asian girl at summer camp one time and she was a real bitch." Kimberly Joyce

6.  The Proposal (2009)

This cutesy chick flick won my heart. Not only was Sandra Bullock's wardrobe amazing in those first few scenes, who could not be won over to see her in stilettos in the boat scene? Anyhow seeing her trip to Alaska and the beautiful scenery as a background to this classic rom-com made my heart flutter. Even the stereotyping with Betty White as Grandma Annie as the "part-Native" woman who was dancing around a fire in the forest didn't bother me. It was all just too hilarious. Haven't added yet to my DVD roster, but will soon.

Favorite Quote: "Oh, the decoupage box that he made, where he'd taken the time to cut out twenty little pictures of himself, just pasted all over the box. So beautiful! I opened that beautiful little decoupage and out fluttered these tiny little hand cut heart confettis and once they cleared, I looked down and I saw the most beautiful, big..." Margaret Tate

7. In Her Shoes (2005)

Cameron Diaz plays the slutty sister (to Toni Colette) in this flick. But then she learns to mend her ways and begin to find her grounding. This film is heart-warming and endearing. Since I have never had a sister, I think the way that these two interact is probably close to the reality of this type of relationship. It was also based on a Jennifer Garner book. I like to watch this on days where I feel like I need some hope for change in my life.

Favorite Quote: "You're not going to look like this forever, you know. Eventually you'll be older, and all of the men who foot your bill now will be buying drinks for women half your age and then what will you do? Well, you'd better think of something because middle-aged tramps aren't cute, they're pathetic." Rose Feller

8. Georgia Rule (2007)

Lindsay Lohan plays the troubled teenager here who is sent to her grandmother's to get straightened up by her mother. It turns out she unveils a secret to her grandmother that changes the way people relate to her and understand her. The whole family dynamic begins to change and the rebel without a cause softens and begins to show her true self. I have watched this movie over and over again. I cried when I first watched it.

Favorite Quote: "Okay, see, I tried to be nice, but let me put this a different way because you're not really getting it right now. If you call me a name, if you throw something at me- ever again!- if I see you talking to Harlan, yelling at Harlan, having anything AT ALL to do with Harlan, I will find all of your boyfriends and I will fuck them stupid. Okay? Get it? Thanks guys." Rachel Wilcox

9.  Down With Love (2003)

This movie keeps itself in constant rotation in my DVD viewing collection. Just when I think I am over it, I watch it and fall in love with it again. A smartly dressed author heads to the big city to take her book on tour. Seemingly, but what is she really up to? The divine early '60s wardrobe, large sets, and nods to old cinema make me swoon at this movie. It is smartly written and well executed in my chick-flick loving books. I remember Le Château had even launched a collection based on the wardrobe for this movie when it came out many years ago, which sold out in 6 weeks.

Favorite Quote: "The men who resent my success won't give me the time of day, and the men who respect my success won't give me the time of night." Vickie Hiller

10. Sex and the City: The Movie (2008)

I don't think that this movie needs much of an explanation, but it is the ultimate chick-flick release of the decade. Fashionistas on the prowl in NYC. Love, love, love. When I saw this movie in the theatre, I cried. It was just after a break up and the scene in the gorgeous apartment with Big was too close to home for me. Anyhow I still adore this movie and pull it out from time to time, it will forever be in my DVD collection (or digital movie collection or whatever we will call it in ten years).

  5. Kateryna - 4 & 5 are pretty obscure, so it's pretty natural that you haven't seen them. In Her Shoes is a great mainstream flick - go. rent. now. :P

  6. Great list! I haven't seen Connie & Carla, Sex in the City, Georgia Rule or Pretty Persuasion though. Your top three picks are stellar and most rom-coms with Sandra Bullock equal fun.
