Found: HBC Blanket Ottoman

Yesterday while trekking through The Bay Eaton's Center, I came across this spectacular ottoman that's design is based on the classic HBC point blanket. I thought it would be a cozy and lovely addition to my living room that would go perfectly with my new charcoal grey coach. It is on sale there for $225 (small version) and the longer version is also available in red with the black stripe. To me this imagery is classic Canadiana but as most Native people know it has loaded connotations.

If you like the design, go for it. Whether it represents Canadiana shouldn't have much to do with your own personal taste. Down here at most smaller rez-based pow wows, Pendleton blankets are still given away as a special honor, even though Pendletons are also connected to the infected blankets biological attack on our ancestors.

Personally, since none of our northern textile designs are reproduced, there are tons of central and south american textile designs being reproduced, which one could easily adapt towards furniture coverings. I've found these to be incredibly gorgeous textiles... especially the Incan woollen designs.

  2. DJ TR-ONE - I didn't know that history about Pendleton blankets but have an idea about their importance for Native Americans. Great information to know, now I don't feel as bad for liking the HBC blanket style
