Currently obsessing: Mid-century modern credenzas

This ones online and a good deal, but a little too "teak."

It has been almost six months since I have moved in with my boyfriend. He has been a bachelor for over seven years in our current abode, and the place is in definite need of a complete overhaul some new furnishings. We started with the couch. We bought one last month from EQ3 and are waiting for the delivery. The next piece that we are looking to purchase is a TV entertainment unit of sorts.

Our EQ3 couch, but ours is dark grey.

I am loving the idea of getting a credenza, but not just any credenza one that has a mid-century modern design. The problem is this style is not exactly available everywhere and while there are some online, their high sticker price has even put me into shock. Looking around at antique stores and on Craigslist has unearthed some that are perfect ... except they are teak. One walnut credenza came and went before we could even send an email. Others that seem almost perfect that can be found in regular furniture stores around town feature doors that *gasp* have glass. A big no-no in our books.

Our place is small and so it is important to have continuity in our aesthetic, in particular with the choices of wood for our furniture. My computer armoire (which goes in the main area of our place) is in a dark espresso wood finish so we both are pretty much on that tip that we want our credenza in a darker finish. But where oh where do we find one? So the search goes on, and yes it the (almost) sole purpose of all my shopping energy.

Quite love this walnut beauty with tambour doors for only $4600 USD *gasp*.

I've never been big on mid-century design. I prefer much heavier/substantial styles like mission/craftsman. That style of credenza would go great with your sofa, though. Expand your search to yardsales/garage sales and thrift shops. If Montreal isn't a long trip try looking up there, as well. I'd suggest Buffalo, Niagra, or Rochester in NY, but I'm not sure how bad customs/tax/tariff would be on used furniture bought in the United States.

  2. DJ TR-ONE - yes I need to scout out the local vintage shops here but part of the problem is that in a big city they jack the prices to what the market will take ($600+). In that case then I should just buy a new one ... outskirts are too hard w/o a vehicle to transport.

If you and your boyfriend are cool with rehabbing... do like people in NYC have been doing for the longest time... SCOUT TRASH DUMPSTERS!!! Print copies of those pictures for ya man to carry and anytime either one of is out and you see something similar in a dumpster, go for it! Bring it home, strip it, sand it, then re-stain it, and seal it. total cost, whatever it is that the sandpaper, stripping solution, stain, and sealer are. In the US, it really depends on what city you're in. Some cities will jack up prices in thrift shops, in other cities they'll damn near give certain things away. Keep looking everywhere. Keep looking, it's worth the extra effort. This is how I go about buying vinyl records, btw. Everywhere and anywhere... never know what you'll find or where you'll find it.

  4. DJ TR-ONE it is a good idea ... Toronto is full of scavengers so even the dumpsters are scoped. As for thrift - they are jacked. Trips to the burbs are great for thrift store finds of all kinds though :).

  5. I obsess over mid-century modern credenzas (my prized possession is a rosewood Deilcraft credenza) and the search for the perfect vintage teak desk.

  6. We found one through Craigslist -- a guy in Burlington buys them up from garage sales, fixes them up as a hobby. Got it for about $400.

We're going for mid-century modern elements in our home decor too.
