Charlie at 4 yo in her burgundy onesie
Looking through old photos recently I came across this one of me when I was about four years old. This is a special picture because it was taken of me in an outfit hand-picked by father (who sadly passed later that year) and is the focus of my mother's favorite story of me when I was a young girl.
I was going to pre-kindergarten and wore this particular outfit to my class (on the rez). There was a game were we all sat cross-legged on the floor clapping and singing "Who's wearing ____, who's wearing ____" so we could all learn our colours. We would say "Brian's wearing blue" or what have you. So one day in class my teacher is asking "Who's wearing red, who's wearing red?" I looked around and could find no one was wearing red. Someone had guessed me.
"Well I am not wearing red, I am wearing burgundy," I state to the class and to my teacher (the picture does not do it justice because the outfit was mos def burgundy). My pre-k teacher looks at me and says "Lisa, for the sake of the class please let's just call it red." I am sure I acquiesced at that point, but definitely begrudgingly. What is she talking about red, who calls burgundy red? Uggh.
And so this is the earliest memory of my fashion beginnings. I still don't understand how these children were learning primary colours when I was clearly already miles ahead and onto shades and tints. Oh my. Or perhaps it was just an early sign of my fondness for red wine ...

This is a GREAT story! It's so funny hearing about yourself as a kid. I love when Mum shares about my sister and I. She told me I loved picking my own outfits and used to tell stories in the mirror for hours! Baha!
ReplyDeleteYou were cute kid :)
LMAO! I was like that when I was a lil kid, too! Only, I was never on the rez. Non-rez school teachers were not fond of the "smart-mouthed injun brat". That was their problem, though. I loved flexing my intelligence. Btw, your onsie is burgandy, even in that picture you'd have to be partially colorblind to not notice.
ReplyDeleteCasie - Family stories are the best. This one is one of my faves too. I think it's funny you used to be in front of the mirror for hours - such a precursor :P. Loves it!
ReplyDeleteDJ TR-ONE - ha ha maybe my bf is ... he thinks it's "red." meh
Knowing the difference between burgenday and red at the age of four years old shows your creative and fashion intellect - your kindergarden teacher seemed to be lacking in both departments. Glad you voiced your opinion!
ReplyDeleteKimberly - thanks doll!
