Luminato love I: Digging Roots

It was the first weekend with Luminato in town and my first weekend partaking in festival activities. Toronto is so fun in the summer because there is a festival every weekend. Luminato is a nine day art festival with a lot of free events all over the city.

But before the all that, I went to Milestones at Dundas Square with Nadya, Waawaate, and lovely Selena for some eats on Friday eve. I was too lazy to wait for their lovely patio, which I wrote about here.

The first night of the festival featured Randy Bachman in the Yonge-Dundas square with Digging Roots opening. They are a wicked blues/rock band that features Algonquin/Mohawk Raven Kanatakta and Anishinabe Shoshona Kish, that dynamic duo that can light up a room. In this case they lit up a huge crowd.

Shoshona in a wicked black dress that reminded me of a Lykke Li outfit.

And they brought out a huge crowd. Many über-talented peeps came out to show their support for Digging Roots.

James Kinistino and Laura Milliken of Big Soul Productions.
Friend and Harmony Rice caught up at the show.
Candace Wilde and Niki Cooke were reprezenting.
Waawaate Fobister (gets two mentions because of his Dora Award nominations)
with fellow actor Eva Tabobondung.

It was a great success of a show, and a whole lot of fun for everyone who came out. It was super cool to see such a cross-section of Toronto's population out to enjoy a free public concert. Digging Roots even had their photo in the printed Saturday's Globe & Mail, which covered the event.

I kind of wanted to get a makeover at the L'oreal tent just because I could.

  3. Rich was there in the corner ... "That's me in the corner, that's me in the spotlight."

I know I wanted the group shot but the two I got were oh-not-so coordinated, if someone got a better one (out of the three cameras) email me!

  4. I was there last year, and yes, I got the makeover just because I could ;-)

A lot of people are queuing to get their hair done, not so many to try on the makeup... weird.

Anyway, I agree, Toronto is a great place in the summer, tons of festivals and a really good atmosphere. Ottawa is fun too that said, especially with Canada Day coming soon.
