Last fall a play phenom hit Buddies and Bad Times Theatre. It was Agokwe, a one man play by twenty-four year old Ojibwe actor and playwright Waawaate Fobister. I scored tickets to it's opening night and was blown, blown, blown away by it's fabulousness.
It is all about gay love and it's complexities on Native reservations at a first glance but delved deeper into social comentary on Native life today (the conflict of an absent father and it's effects). It also showcased Fobister's deep acting talents, wit, and humour. I almost cried, I laughed and ultimately felt full of such pride when I first saw the play.
I went a second time, this time with an entourage in tow so they could enjoy the experience as well. So it's no surprise that it would be revered and rewarded. But it was just announced yesterday that it received eight Dora nominations in the general theatre category beating out Jersey Boys seven nominations. Awards are announced June 29, I might just make up a t-shirt for the occasion ...
