Would you don a headdress?

So Lilly Allen rolled through Toronto last night at the Sound Academy on the last leg of her North American tour. It sounded like it was a great concert, but I couldn't for the life of me convince one of my friends to get tickets to go with me so I just let it pass by.

Here is the interesting part though, apparently this group from Seattle Natalie Portman's Shaved Head opened her act last night. Check out the video for Native cultural appropriation. Vocalist Claire England wears a headdress while a few of them don warlike paint on their cheeks.

I am actually a tad ambivalent on this video because first of all I don't like this group's sound at all but second of all they are clearly directed at a younger demographic than I. Their video is on trend with all the 'hipsters' shopping at Urban Outfitters for their "Native" beaded headbands and such. So I guess I do like the fact that Native fashion is in the forefront but my wish is that there were more Native designers, jewelry designers, and shoe designers prevalent on the market so that at least people were given options of 'authentic' or at least quality Native gear.

  1. I kinda like Natalie Portman's Shaved Head but that video is an eyesore. Way too many bright flashing colors. Just earlier today I stopped at Costco's (I'm not sure it if you have them in Canada but it's like a huge bulk store mostly in the suburbs) and there was this white dude at a table selling discount "Native jewelry." I mean seriously, who buys that stuff? And especially at Costco's. So lame. Last time I bought a beaded item was in Arizona, from a Native person, when I went to the Grand Canyon.

  3. Karen - weird on the Costco craft table. I have never seen anything like that there, just some traveling coffee salespeople. AZ & NM have the best Native jewelery and beaded items - I am gonna have to stock up next time I travel that way.

Braided Diva- yes the video as Karen said it best "is an eyesore"
