Urban Warrior: Julie Lafreniere

Julie Lafreniere
(Métis) does promotions for Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival and Winnipeg Free Press and is a freelance writer while completing her Masters in English at the University of Winnipeg.

1. A Pen and Paper
Although I do most of my writing on my Macbook, there is the occasional time when I get up at night with the urge to write something and the pen and paper by my bed is useful.

2. My family
My son is my greatest teacher, followed by my father who has taught me about my Indigenous-self within our white world. My siblings are my best friends.

3. Winnipeg, MB
It is my home and the homeland of my Métis ancestors. I couldn't move if I tried (and I've tried).

4. Elders & Professors
They humble, challenge and bless me with their knowledge and time.

5. Hope & Humour
Life would be boring and meaningless without hope and nothing is worth taking that seriously.

6. My spirituality/faith.
I've learned to become comfortable with the hybrid (Catholicism/Traditional Indigenous) that is my spirituality a.k.a. me.

7. Paul Brown Flat Iron
I use it everyday. Once forgot it on a trip and made my friend overnight UPS it to me.
8. American Idol
Kinda embarrassing, but I'm really into American Idol this year. My son and I talk about it for hours. Go Adam!

9. Macbook

For obvious reasons.
10. The patio at the Toad in the Hole Pub
I'm not into clubs, but the best place in Winnipeg to hang with your friends and have a certified chilled beverage is the patio at the Toad. The street traffic is awesome and you'll always run into someone you know.

Inspired by Toronto Life's 'City Survivor' pages, UNGS is selecting Indigenous individuals from all over who represent what it is to be a Native person living in today's modern world and how we decide to navigate it.

  1. Cute picture with her and her son. That white tie is adorable. And American Idol...I haven't watched it in a while but I hope Megan Corkrey wins this season.

  2. Hi there and nice to meet you! I spotted your blog on Canada Blog Friend, got curious, and started reading!

I love your personality, a true mix of beliefs and cultures. Go girl!

As an immigrant in Canada, I'm always curious to see how others Canadian live in this bog country, so I'll be back for more. Oh, and I have to add I love Winnipeg. My husband grew up there and I went there to visit a few times, and it has a great energy.

  3. Nadya Kwandibens took the photo of Julie & her son - she is mega talented.

Zhu thanks for checking my blog out - this blog in particular is all about Julie and not myself (Lisa) but she is what the blog is all about showing Native peoples who are dispelling stereotypes and doing great work.

I hope you come back :).

  6. laliberte - thanks for checking in on the blog. You should make a point to meet Julie, she is a hard-working girl looking to make a positive change. I am kind of pale skinned too in contrast to my eldest brother and especially many of my relatives, but it doesn't matter what's on the outside, but on the inside :). Hope to see you back on here soon, Happy New Year!
