True dirt, I mean grit

Variety Magazine has reported that there will be a remake of the 1969 John Wayne western True Grit, directed by Oscar-winning Ethan and Joel Coens(No Country for Old Men).

This Paramount remake will be more faithful to the Charles Portis book, which follows a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman, tracks her father's killer in hostile Indian territory.

I am excited for this remake because it means some roles are up for grabs for Native American actors, but I am also leery of the film because of the history of John Wayne films depicting Native peoples as savages. Let's hope Paramount and the Coen brothers take the high road and create some depth to the Native American characters.

Although having said that I haven't read the novel, so I am not sure how much room for interpretation they will create in this adaptation.

No casting has been announced yet.

  1. I try to avoid John Wayne movies as much as humanly possibly. Most westerns are so blah to me. But if this remake happens to showcase some multi-layered Native characters I'd give it a shot.

  3. I can't say that Westerns are a genre that I love either, I am merely looking out for the Native actors and seeing there are some opportunities ahead, and optimistic for an honest portrayal. I did however wear my Frye boots and my cowboy belt all day yesterday though . . .

  4. Now southwest style is a different matter. Over the weekend I was looking for a pair of cowboy boots. I think they're great. Cowboy hats too. When I was in the Forever 21 accessory store I noticed a theme of southwest stuff too: beads, feathers, plaid prints and urban cowboy attire. I'd even venture to say they were going for a "cowboy & Indians" theme...just checked out their website and yep. http://www.forever21.com/images/category/whatsnew_app.jpg?3252009

  6. Karen - totally the feathers and stuff is everywhere along with moccasins, etc. I want to write about it but then the academic in me takes over and makes me want to research commodification - so I pause. But I but feather earrings from Forever 21 in LA and I loves them. I am thinking of doing a photo shoot in a western theme just so I can over-indulge in it all.

Peruchito- Aha ha that is awesome I would love to see a western short done like that. Kent Monkman has 'Shooting Geronimo' which is pretty dope still.
