Lessons on being a stylista without breaking the piggy bank
In honour of Toronto Fashion Week, here is a book on how to be an über-style icon packaged in a magazine-like read. Authors and self-professed style mavens Melissa de la Cruz and Karen Robinovitz take you on a journey in The Fashionista Files: Adventures in Four Inch Heels and Faux-Pas that promises “in two weeks or less, you’ll be living the lush life.” While the tents are just 10 days away, the real question is during these recession conscious times just how lush can we get?
The economic forecast has gloomed over most stylista’s fashion season forecast and selling luxury and lifestyle in any package is becoming more difficult. However, this 2004 publication stays au courant offering hints of how to stay stylish on any budget. Author de la Cruz states that “There’s a difference between fashionista and just being rich enough to buy nice things.” Their insightful shopping tips range from bargain hunting at Target to the art of the splurge, while their wardrobe building tips show you how to rejuvenate vintage finds to stating the importance of a status handbag.
From Coco to cocktails this book covers fashion in all it’s incarnates. The section on beauty lays out how to survive a Brazilian to getting a good brow arch, while the chapter on cocktail chatter details movies, magazines and books every fashion insider should know. The trouble is, if you are a true fashion slave, you already know most of the information provided in this guide. Most of us insiders are not willing to cut a t-shirt to make a halter top. It is, well, just plain tacky.
Their best insight lies in the Fashion Week chapter where it says that “part of the fun of going to Fashion Week is being privileged enough to complain about having to cover it, as if someone is forcing us to drink champagne, gobble down canapés, and take cabs all over the city.” Now that is true insider information.
While the content may seem like mindless fodder to some, as Toronto ramps up for Fashion Week, this book would be a perfect guide for any first-timer in the tents, even amidst this dark economic forecast.
