My Grammy and your grammy sittin' by the fire

Grammy night is here - the countdown clock says just a little more than six hours away. While I usually don't actually watch the awards and just look at the best/worst dressed list the next day, there is one reason to tune in: Best Native American Music Category.

And the nominees are . . . .

1) Songs from the black hills - Bryan Akipa

2) Spo'Mo'Kin'Nan - Black Lodge

3) Red Rock - Northern Cree

4) Come to Me Great Mystery- Native American Healing songs - Various Artists

5) Faith - Kevin Yazzie*

Ok, so here are the few issues I have about the Grammy's:

1) Will any of these artists get face time on the actual show (I want to see what they are wearing).

2) Isn't about time there was a contemporary Native American Music Category? We have so many wonderful contemporary musicians doing amazing modern music that need encouragement and enlightenment. We have musicians doing hip-hop, R&B, indie, pop, traditional music remixes, experimental, blues and the list goes on.

On my My Space page, I have a category of my friends that is entitled Native/Indigenous Musicians that shows over 50 musicians that are phenom and all doing amazing contemporary work. So in honour of them and their absence during this Grammy evening, I invite you to check their music out and just see what North America is missing out on tonight.
