Lots to love about Lykke Li

The Swedish pop singer brings more stage presence and more fans to her second performance in Toronto as she sings to a sold-out show

Finally the Hills look-alikes next to me finally start to get a little hype and stop gossiping when Lykke Li blends her 'I Don’t Mind' with Lil Waynes 'A Milli' and begins to beat the drums frenetically. “I wanna dance,” the blonde in an updo to the other blonde with the sparkly barrette pinning back her locks.

The crowd at this Swedish pop star’s third performance in Toronto on Friday Feb. 6 is hard to lock down. It ranges from the Queen West hipsters donned in requisite American Apparel black tights and vintage finds, lesbian lovers, the skinny jeans guy in his sneaks and Wayfarer glasses, a few Hills fans, to a smattering of couples and 30-somethings in the mix.

The main floor at the Phoenix Concert Theatre was packed. Even on the balcony people were angling for space while spilling drinks on each other (only one fight broke out). I managed to accidentally grab the thigh of a lady mistaking it for that of my boyfriend. It was only after a long rub that I realized I had the wrong thigh (after which her girlfriend glared at me). Tight quarters require more careful attention.

All attention was on Li as she gave a dynamic performance in her flowy black dress, black ruffly scarf, opaque black leggings with a reverse seam up the back and Doc Martens. She gave her requisite robotic Stevie Nicks dance moves and smashed around the stage often. Her haunting voice and sweet, demure moments are boldly contrasted with her energy when she picks up a megaphone and blows hard on a kazoo.

The big rise from the crowd came when they thought she was good and she was gone after just one hour of taking in songs from the Swedish pop singer’s debut CD Youth Novels. She came out for an encore and gave a gorgeous finale of her sweet song Tonight which melted even the Hills girls next to me to feel a little wistful.
