Grocery shopping gets groovy

Who knew shopping for groceries could be such an eye-opening experience? It has almost been two months since I have been living in my new bachelorette pad. I went grocery shopping on my first day, and not once since. Although I did get a dose or two of Perrier in the mix. Finally I broke down the other day and made the venture.

I went to Price Chopper, one of the cheap grocery stores, so I could stretch out my paycheque while stocking up on basics for my bare cupboards. It is not a sexy store, and I was really not looking forward to traipsing the (not worthy) aisles in my hot Italian leather pumps.

First stop fruit. Doing good, just going to get a few items since I am sure I will not actually stay in the city for Labor Day weekend. Picked up some lemons, some limes and some green apples. A sure of energy swept over me. How could this be? I just chose Granny Smith over Macintosh, what is the big deal? Then it hit me, I have no one hanging over my shoulder, discussing the merits of one fruit selection over another, or who has to pick out 90% of the groceries since he is the only one that actually cooks. I don't have to get massive amounts of meat, in fact, I could skip buying meat all together. I can buy all my organic, free range, gluten free products that my heart desires (product selection severely limited in Price Chopper mind you).

In all my grocery buying years, I have almost always had to think for two, or in the last case, not think at all. Finally I have the store to myself. Suddenly grocery shopping was super exciting. I began to strut down those aisles musing over what delicious morsels I would bring home with me that night.

By the time I left, I felt satisfied. I had never expected to be exuberant and enlightened simply while getting the groceries. I am happy to be single and independent and in charge. I am happy for how blessed my life is and how fortunate I am to be able to have such a beautiful journey. I left the store floating on air. Now just imagine what could happen in such a stimulating environment as Whole Foods, or better yet, the Liberty Village Dominion where there is plenty of eye candy to pick up with your candy?

    hey lisa,

its hiro. just checking out the link you posted on facebook.

but yooooo... you never went grocery shopping?

its a zen like experience, a religion on its on... depending on the place you shop. personally i found price choppers to be more like some overly conservative catholic church. try the little 24 shopping mart a block west of where we live. that is like a hindu ceremony with the wind running around.. ok maybe not exactly but close.

back when it was warmer, i would take maiia out grocery shopping for that day's dinner. its an adventure every time.
