Diversity in NY Times Style

Yesterday afternoon while sipping on beer on a rooftop patio I was checking the NY Times Style magazine. Well actually I was dissecting it with a friend. We did come across a beautiful spread that we were both crazy about. It was photographed by Jean Baptiste-Mondino, a French photographer and featured a gorgeous black model.

The model was one of the main reasons that I loved this spread, this was the second black model that I had seen in the magazine that had black features and truly showcased diversity within the fashion pages.

Her wildly untamed hair, rich skin and strong features reminded my greatly of York University's Next Top Model winner, Shelina Ebrahim, who went on to South Africa to model, but hasn't found a market here for her look. This spread and the magazine's use of models gives me hope for a brighter future featuring a variety of ethnicities being reflected within fashion pages.

  1. Grand Mamatore- I realize the difficulties within the fashion world regarding race and diversity. I have looked at it all and followed closely. There is no denying the need for stronger representation. That is why I was so pleased to see such representation of a gorgeous model in the NY Times Magazine :D. Looking at the bright side . . .
