Buffalo Burger BBQ

Last weekend, I went to a barbecue where the merits of store-bought burger patties (like those President's Choice skinny things) where compared against homemade hamburger patties. It was actually only one dude, who was like "I am all about paying $10 to have someone else make it for me."

Meanwhile, the host, and my friend, was busy making beautiful beef patties that were thick and delicious. I waited to have that, whilst dude gnawed away at his.

I couldn't believe that it was even a discussion, of course homemade is better, I didn't know people still bought those patties for real. I saw them in the store but couldn't fathom that laziness that couldn't make a burger pattie from scratch.

So as I was praising the homemade pattie, I was saying how it was so cool, because you can make lamb burgers instead of beef if you wanted. Dude gave me a weird look, and was like lamb? His judgmental eyes over something so innocuous a lamb burger told me that I guess he wouldn't appreciate buffalo burgers either.

I thought about this as I perused this article in Globe & Mail which was all about wild game in Quebec.

The article talks about how Quebecois feel that it is their inherent right to be able to hunt and eat wild game. Did I miss something? Aren't the Quebecois from France? Who's supposed to have inherent rights here? The Algonquins and Mohawks would sure have some inherent rights to hunting and eating this game. Honestly I don't know what the Quebec legislation is regarding hunting, especially in the Northern regions but the whole conversation of the article seemed ridiculous to me.

I do love some wild game though, and it is a shame when it is not more readily available. I was crushed at Crush last year when I went to order venison, and they said it was out of season. Apparently the Northern Quebecois had finished hunting.

I have some elk and buffalo in my freezer from Quebec, probably from the same hunters, ready for my dining pleasure whenever I chose to indulge.

So the conversation continues, I would rather have my wild game from Indigenous groups who hunt game traditionally. But who has that access? One just can't get wild meat like I used to eat when I was a child, living in Cariboo Country, BC. And so I rely on the Quebecois hunters to get my fill.

I will take a buffalo burger on my barbecue any day, any way.
